MXGP: Lucas Coenen dominates in Johannesburg

Lucas Coenen claimed his fifth victory on his 450 in the 2026 FIM MXGP Motocross World Championship at Terra Topia, marking the long-awaited return of the series to South African soil.  Lucas secured his seventh perfect start of the season in the first race. The Belgian then built up a small lead and controlled the rest of the race. In the second race, he shot into the lead on the first lap and repeated the same performance. The 19-year-old was flawless and managed the 30-minute-and-2-lap race, dominating the event once again. Lucas’s victory saw him pick up 11 championship points, extending his lead over Jeffrey Herlings to 68. Here are Lucas’s comments.

Lucas Coenen:

“Tracks like these are really great to ride, but the starts are crucial: if you’re close to the holeshot, you’re almost home and dry. I still had to fight to maintain the gaps, but I won all three races, so I’m happy. I managed to handle any pressure. You can’t do better than 1-1-1, so it was a perfect weekend. We performed well and I’m raring to go right now. We’re off to the US to enjoy a restful weekend on the sand and then we’ll give it another go in England.”
