Ducati launches the brand-new Quarter-Liter.
The heart of the Desmo250 MX is an all-new 250 cc single-cylinder engine, designed specifically for motocross and developed without relying on solutions derived from the larger-displacement unit. Compact, lightweight, and highly performant, it weighs just 24.7 kg and features Ducati’s exclusive desmodromic valve system, a technology that allows it to reach extremely high engine speeds while maintaining precision and reliability. Capable of revving up to 15,000 rpm, it delivers progressive power supported by a broad and usable torque curve that ensures acceleration, traction, and control in every riding condition. Thanks to the desmodromic valve system, the engine can reach 15,000 rpm—a benchmark figure in its category—offering greater over-rev capability during starts. The absence of the springs typically found in conventional systems allows for more precise control of valve opening and closing, reducing friction and maximizing race performance. To ensure effective performance throughout every phase of riding, the engine has been developed with a broad and well-balanced torque curve across its entire operating range. Strong low-end response is combined with generous top-end extension that fully exploits the potential of the desmodromic system, providing a tangible advantage in key situations such as starts, corner exits, and moments when one less gear change makes all the difference.
With the aluminum perimeter frame and swingarm derived directly from the Desmo450 MX, the Desmo250 MX is the result of extensive refinement work aimed at maximizing riding feel. Optimization of the engine mounts has produced a chassis that is precise, responsive, and well-balanced, giving the rider exceptional confidence and control in every phase of riding, from braking zones to corner entry and mid-corner stability. The Desmo250 MX suspension has been developed through dedicated tuning work specifically for this motorcycle. The Showa fork and rear shock, designed exclusively for this model, feature specific hydraulic settings engineered to deliver the best dynamic balance. The fork is a 49 mm closed-cartridge inverted unit. The rear shock is made of black anodized aluminum with a 16 mm shaft and 129 mm of travel. The result is a neutral balance that limits weight transfer, improving precision, stability, and control. This solution makes the bike intuitive and versatile, capable of expressing its full potential on tracks with varying characteristics and racing lines.
The Desmo250 MX braking system was developed in collaboration with Brembo, Ducati’s long-standing partner. Brembo calipers and master cylinders work together with Galfer discs measuring 260 mm at the front and 240 mm at the rear, selected for their lightweight construction, precision, and durability even under the most extreme riding conditions.
Ducati Traction Control is one of the most advanced elements of the electronic package. Based on three intervention levels, the system interprets in real time what is happening beneath the wheels and progressively adjusts torque delivery, intervening only when strictly necessary. Already highly appreciated on the Desmo450 MX, this system enhances rider safety, reduces physical effort during riding, and can improve lap times. Unlike systems currently available in the segment, the DTC implemented on the Desmo250 MX calibrates power reduction according to the actual rear-wheel slip, ensuring effectiveness, responsiveness, and smooth intervention. The throttle response of the Desmo250 engine can be adjusted through two different maps. Using the Smooth setting, engine response is softer and more progressive than the Dynamic setting, which delivers more direct power. Engine Brake Control has been tuned to help riders optimize motorcycle stability under extreme corner-entry conditions by balancing the forces acting on the rear tire during intensive application of reverse torque generated by engine deceleration. EB monitors throttle position, selected gear, and engine-shaft deceleration during aggressive braking and adjusts ignition timing to balance the torque forces applied to the tire. Engine Brake Control is adjustable across two levels. As standard, the Desmo250 MX offers two riding modes that can be customized via an app, allowing every rider to define the ideal setup for any situation. Adjustments to Power Mode, Ducati Traction Control, Engine Brake Control, and Launch Control make it possible to tailor the motorcycle’s character to riding style, surface type, and track conditions. This advanced level of customization provides a real advantage on the track.
A specific 5-speed gearbox has been developed for the Desmo250 MX, paired with a Brembo hydraulic clutch featuring a 7-plate pack and diaphragm spring. This configuration is designed to ensure precise gear engagement and consistent modulation, providing smooth clutch release and reliable performance even under the most demanding riding conditions.
