Having introduced the first traction control system in motocross capable of accurately determining the actual slip of the rear wheel, the Borgo Panigale-based manufacturer has developed a brand-new software system for the Desmo450 MX that calculates maintenance intervals based on engine usage intensity. To access these new features, simply visit your Ducati dealer, where the engine control unit can be updated free of charge. Drawing on experience gained in Superbike and MotoGP, Ducati Corse has developed a specific algorithm for the Desmo450 MX that calculates an engine stress index in real time, based on operating parameters and usage conditions. This index also takes into account the type of surface on which the bike is ridden, and continuously increases a percentage-based engine wear counter. The system then updates the maintenance schedules based on this index, which can be viewed via the Ducati X-Link App. In this way, the intervals for inspection and servicing are adjusted according to riding style, with more frequent servicing for professional/intensive use, or less frequent intervals for amateur riders, moving beyond traditional static schedules. The service interval limit has been calibrated based on Alessandro Lupino’s use of the bike; should the stress on the engine be lower, the app itself will calculate longer service intervals, offering a financial benefit to the customer. Maintenance for the Desmo450 MX involves two types of service, known as “MID” and “FULL”. The MID Service includes piston replacement and valve clearance adjustment and can be carried out at intervals of between 45 and 60 hours, depending on the actual wear of the engine. The FULL Service, which involves a complete engine overhaul, can instead be carried out at intervals of approximately 90 to 120 hours, again depending on the condition and wear observed.
